An Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) is an official who presides at an administrative trial-type hearing to resolve a dispute between a government agency (such as the FAA and NTSB) and someone affected by a decision of that agency, such as a pilot who the FAA has determined is in violation of the administrative/regulatory law of the FARs.
